Product Overview

OPGW (Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire) is a dual-function cable that serves as both a grounding wire for lightning protection and a fiber optic communication link on high-voltage transmission lines. The optical fibers are housed in a stainless steel tube, protected from environmental conditions including lightning strikes, short-circuit currents, mechanical loading, and temperature extremes.
Opelink's OPGW cable uses a stainless steel tube optical unit with either central loose tube or layer stranding structure, armored with aluminum alloy wire and aluminum clad steel wire. It is designed for installation on transmission and distribution lines at voltage classes from 110kV to 500kV, carrying voice, data, and video communications for smart grid, SCADA, and power line protection systems.

OPGW Structure Types

Opelink offers two OPGW structure types to suit different application requirements:

Type I: Central Stainless Steel Tube (Center-Based)

  1. Optical unit positioned at the center of the cable core
  2. Stranded with a single layer of aluminum clad steel wire in spiral pattern
  3. Smaller cable diameter and lighter weight
  4. Lower short-circuit current capacity
  5. Suitable for matching GJ-35 and GJ-70 ground wires
  6. Best for lower voltage lines (110kV-220kV) with moderate short-circuit requirements

Type II: Stranded Stainless Steel Tube (Layer Stranding)

  1. One or more aluminum clad steel wires on the non-central layer replaced with stainless steel tube optical units
  2. Larger cable diameter accommodating more optical fibers
  3. Higher tensile strength and short-circuit current capacity
  4. Optimal balance between mechanical and electrical performance
  5. Best for higher voltage lines (220kV-500kV) and long-span installations
  6. Supports up to 144 fibers in multi-tube configurations

Installation and Packaging

Installation Guidelines

  1. OPGW is installed on the topmost position of transmission towers, replacing or serving as the ground wire
  2. Installation method: stringing with tensioner and puller (avoid loose laying to prevent fiber damage)
  3. Maximum pulling tension during installation should not exceed 20% of RTS
  4. Use anti-twisting devices to prevent cable rotation during stringing
  5. Sag tension calculations must account for wind load, ice load, and temperature variations per IEEE 1138
  6. Joint boxes should be installed at tower positions with adequate climbing space
  7. Minimum clearance to phase conductors must be maintained per local electrical safety regulations
